About the Journal

Calm Counsel for Protecting Home and Family

An independent journal for responsible adults who take protection seriously, and calmly.

Most protection is quiet, steady and ordinary. So is most of what we write about.

Home Guard Journal is an independent publication about personal and home protection. We write for responsible adults who want clear, practical, carefully researched information on carrying a firearm lawfully, securing a home, preparing a family for emergencies, training well and owning firearms responsibly.

We believe protection starts long before any emergency. It lives in daily habits: locking up, paying attention, storing firearms securely, practicing regularly and knowing the rules where you live. Our aim is to make those habits easier to build.

What we cover

  • Carry & Permits: how permits generally work, reciprocity when traveling, holsters and carry methods, and everyday carry etiquette.
  • Home Security: layered, practical approaches to securing a home.
  • Preparedness: family emergency plans, supplies and situational awareness.
  • Training: practice habits, choosing courses and building skills safely.
  • Responsible Ownership: safe storage, especially around children, and the responsibilities that come with ownership.

What we stand for

We are proud of the long American tradition of responsible, law-abiding self-reliance, and we write in that spirit without taking part in politics. Our editorial commitments are simple:

  • Safety first. Every article reflects established safe handling and storage practices.
  • Respect for the law. Laws vary by state and change over time. We explain general concepts and always encourage readers to check their state’s current rules. We do not provide legal advice.
  • Calm over fear. We avoid sensationalism. Preparedness should make you feel steadier, not more anxious.
  • Honesty. We do not invent statistics, testimonials or endorsements.

You can read more about how we research and write in our Editorial Standards.
